It is based on resampling and simulations. It was been introduced in Efron (1979) and in the last decade it has been discussed for a wide variety of statistical problems. Introductory are the articles Efron and Gong (1983) and Efron and Tibshirani (1986) and the book Helmers (1991b). Many applications of bootstrap are discussed in Efron (1982). Survey articles are Beran (1984b), Hinkley (1988), and Diciccio and Romano (1988a). For many classical decision problems (testing and estimation problems, prediction, construction of confidence regions) bootstrap has been compared with classical approximations based on mathematical limit theorems and expansions (for instance normal approximations, empirical Edgeworth expansions) (see for instance Bretagnolle (1983) and Beran (1982, 1984a, 1987, 1988), Abramovitch and Singh (1985), and Hall (1986a, 1988) ). An asymptotic treatment of bootstrap is contained in the book Beran and Ducharme (1991). A detailed analysis of bootstrap based on higher order Edgeworth expansions has been carried out in the book Hall (1992). Recent publications on bootstrap can also be found in the conference volumes LePage and Billard (1992) and Joeckel, Rothe, and Sendler (1992). We will consider the application of bootstrap in three contexts: estimation of smooth functionals, nonparametric curve estimation, and linear models. We do not attempt a complete description of bootstrap in these areas.

Unless you work in an ER or Peds ER (physician, PA, NP, or RN), there would be little reason to buy this book.
But for those who do work in the ER, this book is the holy bible of Peds ER and has been for many years. This latest version is updated with some new chapters but overall has the same content that is needed to know how to deal with children in emergent settings

good content - smelly book

the book itself is worth reading. The used copy in 'new' condition I bought was intact in every way except it has a very strong moldy and musty odor. it is sitting now in the sun and open air with the hope that it will eventually be fit to live indoors again.

Constant Companion for Group Work

This insightful book has accompanied me through grad school, two corporate reorganizations and numerous consulting projects. The authors have written an excellent text on the contradictory forces/movements endemic to group life. Their use of paradoxical thought as a lens for thinking about and successfully navigating the territory of group life is both practical and innovative. If you're looking for the usual book about conflict resolution, please look elsewhere. Smith and Berg advocate reclaiming rather than repressing or eliminating the fears and anxieties that define many aspects of group life. Their explanation of concepts such as group paralysis, oscillation, group-as-whole, splitting and individual ambivalence are clear and highly cogent when integrated into a paradoxical framework.

Paradoxes of Group Life is a masterful explication of the concepts its title announces. This readable volume will serve the newcomer to Group Dynamics as well as the more experienced cognoscenti. People are often fundamentally ambivalent about ourselves and our participation in groups. Smith & Berg explain these (often unconscious) dynamics with great clarity and force. Treat yourself to this compelling analysis. I highly recommend their important work!

About the Author

Linda Skrla is Professor of Educational Administration at Texas A&M University. Prior to joining the Texas A&M faculty in 1997, Linda worked as a middle school and high school teacher and as a campus and district administrator in public schools. Her research focuses on educational equity issues in school leadership, including accountability policy, high success school districts, and women superintendents. Linda is Vice President of Division A of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and Editor of Educational Administration Quarterly. She has published extensively in academic journals and has co-authored and co-edited five other books, the most recent of which is Using Equity Audits to Create Equitable and Excellent Schools (Corwin Press, 2009).

Kathryn Bell McKenzie is Associate Professor of Educational Administration and affiliated faculty member in Women and Gender Studies at Texas A&M University. Prior to joining the faculty at Texas A&M, Kathryn worked for over 25 years in public education as a classroom teacher, curriculum specialist, assistant principal, principal, and Deputy Director of the University of Texas/Austin Independent School District Leadership Academy. Maintaining her commitment to practice and practitioners, Kathryn consults and researches extensively in public schools. Her areas of research include Equity and Social Justice in Schools, School Leadership, and Qualitative Methodology. Kathryn is also Associate Editor for Educational Administration Quarterly and Regional Editor for the International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education. Kathryn has published extensively in the major journals in her field. She and her colleagues Dr. Linda Skrla and Dr. Jim Scheurich are the authors of the bestselling Corwin (2009) book, Using Equity Audits to Create Equitable and Excellent Schools.

James Joseph Scheurich is an associate professor in educational administration and the director of the Public School Executive Leadership Programs at The University of Texas at Austin. He is the author of two books, Anti-Racist Scholarship and Research Method in the Postmodern, and coauthor with Bob Donmoyer and Michael Imber of another, The Knowledge Base in Educational Administration. In addition, he and a coauthor have another book under contract and nearly completed, Equity and Accountability. He is the coeditor with Angela Valenzuela of the journal, International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education. He is the author or coauthor of numerous articles in academic journals, including in Educational Researcher, Journal of Education Policy, Urban Education, Educational Administration Quarterly, Education and Urban Society, and the International Journal of Leadership in Education, among others. He also writes newspaper editorials and for education journals, such as Phi Delta Kappan. His doctorate was earned at The Ohio State University.

Exactly What I Expected From Terry Goodkind

The First Confessor (The Legend of Magda Searus) by Terry Goodkind is exactly what the title claims, the story of the Magda Searus, the first Confessor. The events played out here are a crucial part of the back story of the Sword of Truth series. As the story opens, Magda Searus has just lost her husband, First Wizard Baraccus. Feeling lost and alone, Magda sets out to commit suicide in the same manner as her husband, by throwing herself off the wall of the Keep and falling to her death a thousand feet below. At the last possible moment, she finds a note left by Baraccus, urging her to find truth. In the chapters that follow, the reader is given a closer look at the events laid out as backstory during the Sword of Truth series. How the war between the Old World and the New was first started, the making of the Sword of Truth, the hiding of the Temple of the Winds, the creation of the D'Haran bond, the dreamwalkers, the traitors in the Keep, and the reasoning behind the creation of the Confessors. And other events even further back in history are hinted at.

This was an excellent read. I've read each book by Goodkind in one sitting, and this was no exception. This book explains many of the secrets behind the Sword of Truth series and gives the characters mentioned in the series their own stories. Even though this wasn't about the main characters, Richard and Kahlan, I was just as interested in the characters and eager to know more about them. The only two problems I had with this book were that now I feel the need to go back and read the whole series again and now I want to know more about the other events mentioned in the series. Here's hoping Mr. Goodkind feels the urge to write more of the backstory.

A note about the format: The First Confessor (The Legend of Magda Searus) is a self-published e-book. Many of his loyal fans seem to be quite upset that it's only available in e-format, as they don't have the necessary e-readers. Terry Goodkind wanted to tell the story in his own way, without the limitations imposed by a publisher. Apparently, he's one of the first big name authors to venture into the realms of self-publishing. His reasons for doing so can be found on his website at terrygoodkind.com. As reviewers, we tend to shy away from author self-pubs. Many that we've read have had lots of grammatical errors, formatting issues, continuity problems, or just plain poor editing. I didn't find a single thing wrong in this book. That's not to say there aren't problems, just that I didn't find them, and I usually do. If you're leery of reading this because it's a self-pub, don't be. It could easily have been printed by any of the major publishers and I wouldn't have noticed any difference while reading it.

He's Back!

I almost didn't buy this book. Although Terry Goodkind is one of my favorite authors I found his last couple books disappointing, so I started it with low expectations. I was pleasantly surprised. This book was impossible to put down. The story was fast moving, gripping and masterfully written. Mr. Goodkind will have you transported inside the Wizard's Keep while you are reading the story. I feel it is his best effort since Faith of the Fallen. It also gave we SOT series fans a better understanding of how the sword came to be and the creation of the Confessors. If this is an example of what he can do freed from the constraints of a publishing house then I hope the rest of his offerings come in the same format. I can't wait for his next book!

Read the original 11 Sword of Truth books first to avoid huge spoilers.

I was looking at a Wikipedia article about the Sword of Truth series and I noted that the books are listed there according to the series' internal chronology. That puts this book first on the list because it's a prequel. I suspect, therefore, that some of these reviews may be read by people who are new to the Sword of Truth series, who are thinking about starting to read these books, and who want to see what other readers think before taking the plunge. I therefore feel it's crucial to admonish those people: DO NOT BEGIN WITH THIS BOOK. Read the original 11 books (starting with Wizard's First Rule and continuing through to Confessor) BEFORE you even CONSIDER reading this one. This book contains information that would constitute MASSIVE SPOILERS for the original series if you read this one first. Actually, simply putting the word "massive" in all caps doesn't really do it justice. I'm trying to think of a way to describe how important it is to avoid the spoilers and one example that comes to mind is how if you watched the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy before the original three movies, the "I am your father" plot twist in "The Empire Strikes Back" wouldn't contain any suspense at all. Remember how people wondered for three years whether Darth Vader was telling the truth? If you'd seen the prequels first, you'd already know the answer. But I'd argue that reading "The First Confessor" before the original Sword of Truth series would expose you to spoilers on a far greater level than you'd find in the Star Wars context. That's how important the backstory contained in this book is. You'd ruin huge portions of the story. Don't ruin it for yourself. Read the original series first and then you can read the four companion volumes (this one, Debt of Bones, The Omen Machine, and The Law of Nines) in any order you like.

With that said, I should comment on the book itself. The paragraph above makes it obvious that I've read all the books. I rate this one higher than Law of Nines and Omen Machine, but I don't rate it as highly as the earliest books in the original series (say, the first four books through Temple of the Winds). I appreciated the backstory to the original series and the book kept me reading to find out how the result would come about. That is, because it's a prequel I knew how the story had to end, but I wanted to know how it would reach that end. Last night I kept reading until just before 1:00 AM, to the point where my wife kicked me out of the bedroom so she could sleep with the lights out. That's how much I wanted to keep going.

I would have given this book four stars because I greatly enjoyed reading it, but I've taken a one-star deduction off my rating for two reasons. First, I think this book exhibits a style that unfortunately came to plague some of Terry Goodkind's work as the Sword of Truth series stretched on, and that style consists of too many long speeches. How best to explain this? Some writers tell you the story of the characters actually solving their problems and battling their nemeses. You see when the figurative lightbulb clicks on for them and you understand why. Terry Goodkind's work isn't like that these days. Instead, he tells you that the character saw what had to be done, but he doesn't tell you what has to be done or why. Instead, it happens (sometimes explained, sometimes not) and then the character gives a long oration explaining what he did and how he figured it out. It's almost like ex post facto explanation. That can be quite dissatisfying. Second, I think he's taken to letting the characters find the solutions too quickly. In the original Sword of Truth story arc, Mr. Goodkind put his characters through the wringer at times. He tortured them. They went through massive emotional agony. He doesn't seem to do that anymore and the characters are almost too good at quickly realizing the solutions to their problems. No doubt part of that is the shorter length of his newer books. This Kindle e-book didn't contain page numbers, so I can't compare its length to the original 11 books (all of which I have in paper format), but I tore through it far more quickly than I did any of the original books. It's inevitable that with a shorter book you have to resolve matters more quickly. But the quick resolution makes me feel like the characters' natural human flaws are glossed over or ignored. We all have foibles and flaws. It's human nature. It makes a story less plausible when characters' flaws don't hinder them in a meaningful way.

In sum, I enjoyed reading this book and I'd recommend it to anyone who read and enjoyed the main Sword of Truth story arc. But the book has flaws and I don't think I'd be giving a fair review if I ignored them. The flaws didn't prevent me from enjoying the book, but I think they did hinder the book from being as good as it could have been.

I suggest you read Muir's book

The writings in this book provide a foundation of appreciation for all encompassing "nature". This book can be judged by title... John Muir is genius, and a poet! His depth of knowledge (engineering, botany) is evident throughout, and his passion to study everything natural is unsurpassed. He was beyond todays definition of "motivated." His book inspired me to backpack the JMT. Between this book, and hiking "his" trail, I owe my broader spiritual sense to him.

Muir should be required reading, period.

I've only read "My First Summer in the Sierra," and attest to Muir's enchanting style and lucidity. He writes as an enthusiast, but gives his stories a plain-spoken clarity that can be enjoyed by all.

Muir must have been quite an individual - after working as a shepherd for a few months, he talks of getting time off from his employer, "tying some bread to his belt, and walking to Mammoth" from the Merced area of the western foothills of the Sierras. Yep, a nice casual stroll. Or climbing and looking down into the ice cone on Yosemite Falls. Why not? It's there every winter...

I hope Library of America will put out another volume so they can make "The Yosemite" available to all. In it, Muir describes the three native Californian "Yosemite" (Tuolumne, Sequoia, and Kings) almost as a tour guide. This book is a glaring omission from the LoA volume, and gives great insight into the mind of the premier conservationist of the early 1900s.

As always, LoA delivers a quality volume at a good price.
