Beautifully translated classic literature

I've loved this book since I was a child, and when I learned Esperanto I bought this translation. I can't speak to this printing, I bought an earlier printing of this, and La Regxo de la Ringoj (Lord of the Rings) long before Amazon U.S. ever started carrying Esperanto titles. This was translated by an all-star cast of translators in the Esperanto Community. I've read it cover to cover more than once, and I have enjoyed it very much everytime I have done so.

I received the book in less than a week. It was referred to me by a guy that was a vegetarian..It has alot of good information in regards to curing a variety of ailments. It has a list of wonderful herbs to help combat fibroid tumors...This was a must for me because I have problem with those...It also has alot of different diets to follow...This is a good read and a must buy!

Be sure to get the new edition of this book for it has the measurements needed for the holistic remedies.....where the first edition neglected to include the measurements. Haven't had time to read cover to cover yet, but from what I've read to date............ this is a very complete and comphrehensive holistic book that should be a part of everyones health library. I've tried Aurvedic, western, latin and american indian holistic remedies and the African remedies way surpass them in it's healing affects, and their herbs are reasonable to buy.

The Rancher Ropes You In!!

Mrs. Jackson has written a sensual, steamy, and intriguing story about rancher Gavin Blake aka Viper, the Navy SEAL. He’s bold, built, handsome, stubborn, determined and latches on to his prey (Dr. Layla Harris) and he’s not letting go until he has completed his mission – getting better acquainted. Layla didn’t like Mr. alpha male, Gavin, at first but she sure desired him. And he was arrogant enough to call her out on her desire for him. They both had bottled up passion they needed to release. One kiss from Gavin to Layla unleashed it all. Gavin knew their attraction was so strong and he intended to use it to his advantage. Mission Operation Layla has official began! Layla wanted to excavate on Gavin’s land but he wanted to dig into the passion she refused to let out. He wanted her -- BAD! She wanted to keep things between them professional however Mr. Gavin Blake had another job he intended for Layla -- that’s to get inside her.

The bantering between Gavin and Layla was so sensual and at times very playful and comical. Gavin’s constant connotative meanings with words stirred up chemistry and heat between them. Layla found it difficult and unnerving trying to discuss her work seriously with him when all he wanted to do is get under her skin (literally). Layla came looking for treasure on Gavin’s ranch but in turn it was Gavin who found treasure – Dr. Layla Harris.

I give the story 5 stars, because it kept me engaged. I liked the characters, it had unexpected turns in the story and it was sensual. I give an extra star for Granmma Mel - love her.

A beautiful surprise welcomed Gavin on his return to the ranch, by way of Dr. Layla Harris. Sexual attraction was instant between the pair. Brenda carefully wove the narrative of Layla and Gavin, by wrapping up questions of Gavin's mother. As well as Grandma Mel, and her relationship with Caldwell. You come to appreciate the strength of Layla and her devotion to archaeology. The quest for buried loot would uncover not only passion but a secret so deep that it would change the trajectory of everything Gavin had been lead to believe.

Ms. Jackson have done it again; The Rancher Returns (The Westmoreland Legacy) was awesome. Gavin Blake (Viper) and Layla Harris was made for each the other. Cut from different pieces of material but sewn together with love. Their story gave you action, mystery, drama, laughter, and love for both young and old. It had some unexpected turns in it. But the thing I like most was that it brought some old friends back together. I would highly recommend this and many other of Brenda Jackson books to any and everyone. Brenda Jackson never let me down she is forever restoring my faith in true love. My hat off to a gifted writing.

King Tremain, the badass central character of Guy Johnson's Standing at the Scratch Line, was born LeRoi and grew up in the swampy Louisiana bayou during the first part of the 20th century. It is only when he serves overseas during World War I, however, that LeRoi comes to appreciate the majesty of his name. As he should: fighting in the front lines with the "colored" 369th, LeRoi earns the title King. King takes his soldier's stance home with him and throughout his life kills whoever gets in his way, be they Italian mobsters or policemen. Not one for morals or rational contemplation, he lives by the code he relays to his army buddies during the war: "I just got two rules: be courageous and don't take no shit!"

In the course of tracking King's life, Standing at the Scratch Line crosses cities and decades--from New York to New Orleans to Oakland, from the teens to the '40s. In the 30 years this lengthy debut novel spans (1916-1946), much blood is spilt and few lessons learned. The macho misadventures of its larger-than-life protagonist LeRoi Boudreaux Tremain-?aka King?drag the reader from the trenches of WWI to 1940s San Francisco, by way of Harlem and New Orleans. King, who whets his appetite for violence when he takes part in a family feud at the tender age of 14, makes a career as a killing machine and underground entrepreneur. Discovering a taste for shedding blood and a hatred for "American Whites" during combat with the all-black 369th Regiment in the fields of Alsace-Lorraine, King returns home to do battle with the mob, the KKK and law enforcement agents everywhere. Sometimes an avenging angel, sometimes merely an implacable force, King kills as briskly as the hero of a John Woo flick, only without the balletic grace. The glamour of his exploits?in killing, gambling, bootlegging and real estate?dissipates, however, when King's family starts to fall apart. His wife, Serena, undoes him through two illegitimate sons. One, LaValle, is conceived when she sleeps with a white racist sheriff to enable King's escape from captivity; the other, Leroy, is King's child by a New York woman, whose whereabouts Serena discovers but conceals from King. Leroy, left to grow up in an orphanage, causes a "curse" to descend on the family. The book unravels with tragedies of the domestic sort (deaths of relatives, miscarriages, car accidents), which, though cheapened by their frequency and a rather hokey voodoo cast, are somewhat appealing, if only as a break from incessant mayhem. Although Johnson succeeds in dramatizing the forces of prejudice and poverty, is perhaps an impossible task to sustain King's righteous rage, virtually a one-note performance, over so many pages.

Not Bad But a Bit Unrealistic

I thought the story had too many story lines which made it a bit more unrealistic then it needed to be. The main character, King, went to too many places and did too many things which blurred the line between this being a good piece of realistic, somewhat historical fiction, verse this having elements of a tall tale. However, I was engaged for the vast majority of the book. I lost some interest with the book towards the end but was interested to see how it was going to end.

I thought the character of Serena took some interesting turns but thought the author could have better developed her character- front start to end. There was something uneven (perhaps overdeveloped or maybe underdeveloped ) about her character that didn't sit right with me. It seemed the core of her character constantly changed which made her a bit disjointed as a character when you look at her from beginning to end. In other words, I did not see a clear thread in the core of her character. This made me question the author's craft.

As I concluded the last part of the book, I kept asking myself where is Sampson. Unless I missed something, this character just disappears. What happened to Sampson???

Nevertheless, I did enjoy the book and look forward to discussing it with my book club.

Beautiful tale of struggle, honor and determination

This story grabs hold of you from the first page. The action is unrelenting and beautifully articulated. Johnson weaves a narrative that blends poetic alliteration with the struggle of black identity and black love. His story is well rounded. Interesting and entertaining

I read this on my son's recommendation. It was good, though a lot of the events were a little far fetched. I was disappointed in some inaccuracies when describing New Orleans. For one thing, we don't have hills. Everything is flat. Also, there is no Ramparts Street - it's Rampart. And New Orleans Creoles do not think they are white. Other than that, it was pretty good, and I'll buy the second book just out of curiosity to see how some cliffhangers play out.

"The quest for freedom with a small f," writes John Litweiler, "appears at the very beginning of jazz and reappears at every growing point in the music's history." But Litweiler's book is about the upper-case variety of freedom--the Free jazz pioneered in the late 1950s by the likes of Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor, Albert Ayler, Anthony Braxton, and Eric Dolphy. The author, who has also written a fine biography of Coleman, traces the rise and multiple ramifications of this firebreathing music. His judgements have held up superbly since the book's original 1985 publication, and his thumbnail portraits and fine-tuned analyses make this an essential volume.

John Litweiler is a director of the Jazz Instistute of Chicago, and has been a Down Beat staff reviewer since 1968.

A Decent Book; Now Out-Dated. Perhaps an Introduction.

Litweiler's "Freedom Principle" is a pretty good book if you know nothing about "free jazz" (a terrible label, by the way) and want to learn about the dominant performers in the music. He provides some interesting commentary on Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Sun Ra, Albert Ayler, Cecil Taylor, AACM members, and the European performers. Considering when the book was published, it is somewhat out-dated, since many of the artists he mentions (that are still living, of course) have gone on to develop their creativity far beyond the point where Litweiler begins and ends his analysis of it.
Litweiler also develops some perspectives that seem rather off to me. For example, he says that "Among the great jazz musicians, Ayler's emotional range may be the most limited" (p.151). Ayler's music, in my opinion, is quite the opposite. When discussing Miles Davis' fusion period, he states "the content of his music declined to a search for the new idea or effect, and innovation became valueless" (p.224). Considering how many artists have been inspired by Miles' late 60s-mid 70s period (e.g., there have been a flood of reissues documenting this period of his career, and new people are discovering and loving his music from this period every day), this statement seems to be a little too bold, if not totally erroneous. Miles made the most challenging and innovative fusion music of the 70s, and his creativity inspired and influenced not only jazz musicians of the period but also funk and rock musicians. The textures he explored on those early 70s albums are as artful and challenging as anything before or since. He also claims that Sun Ra's love for popular music is a weakness: "Sun Ra's most impenetrable music, as composer and improviser, has been influenced by the most flabby kinds of popular musics. He is the only jazz musician who ever recorded a version of 'Holiday for Strings'" (p.143). Maybe it is just me, but I find the implied tone of the last sentence a little insulting to Sun Ra and his magnificent legacy. Such commentary smacks of elitist arrogance.
This aside, I must say that Litweiler's book about Ornette Coleman is excellent. Compared with "The Freedom Principle," it is like day and night--I almost wonder if they were written by the same person.

Good, if occasionally didactic

Freedom Principle definitely suffers from the author's avocation as music critic--the prose is choppy, and the big thematic ideas occasionally get lost in the minutiae. Chapter 1 "Steps in Search of Freedom" is especially desultory and poorly focused. The chapters on individual players are better.
That said, the book is an excellent introduction to the free jazz movement, and covers the major players well, with very insightful discussions of individual works and solos.
Litweiler is at his worst when his own opinions come blazing through; he loves free jazz and despises rock. It's an opinion shared by others, to be sure, but he belabors his point, and, in the final chapters, all but bludgeons his reader with it. It's a fairly ironic twist in a book dedicated to the unbridled freedom of musical expression.

Bad Jazz Journalism

Litweiler has been a jazz critic for many years and has written a fine book about Ornette Coleman. But this book is really a disappointment. A good scholarly book about the free jazz movement is long overdue, at least in this country, but Litweiler isn't the person to do it. This book reads more like the opinions of a fan rather than thoughtful and considered ideas.
Litweiler often makes statements of opinions and masquerades them as fact. And he For example, he castigates Keith Jarrett mercilessly, questioning Jarrett's originality on spurious grounds. He makes statements to the effect that what Jarrett does is the same as any college music student does when they sit in a practice room and improvise in the style of Bach or Chopin. I have news for him, I never heard anyone do this in any of the music schools that I attended. Classical musicians never improvise, no matter how good it would be for them to learn. So, far from being something that "every student does" this is a pretty rare skill.
And again, Litweiler castigates Sun Ra and Pharoah Sanders for interest in popular music and tonal music respectively. In this, Litweiler shows his own bias, which is definately for the New York Energy school as opposed to the more modal school of Sanders, or the interest that Ra had in situating himself within the jazz canon.
I think the worst thing, though, is that Litweiler completely misses the spiritual side of the music. Free jazz is mostly a spiritual thing for the performers, and for the open listener. Ascension wasn't a raw expression of anger, it was a "rasing of the spirits" in the old Yoruba sense. Litweiler's interest in so much in the "advanced" ideas of free jazz that he misses the point.
A better introduction to this music might be Eberhardt Jost's classic, Free Jazz. It is much more rational and scholarly, though like this book, it's a bit out of date. David Such also wrote a wonderful book on the subject, Avante-Gard Music and Musicians. Such is both an ethnomusicologist and an avant-garde performer, and knows what he's talking about from the inside.

When you're an intermediate student in a language, learning resources become not only tough to find. They tend to be ...

... boring!

But this collection, which I was delighted to grab for my Kindle, has all the great features of other story collections by Olly that I've enjoyed in both Spanish and German. The stories use colloquial language so that you're getting exposure to the way people speak in situations that they actually live.

Highly recommended. I have the print copy of his German short story book, so imagine this one looks just as cool as a paperback.
