The disorder happened due to a long sustained period of traumatic violence during childhood. With hope and the support of amazing people, and at times the teaching and intervention of God, angels, and the Holy Spirit, a reformation of the psyche takes place. This book is a witness of the living Christ. The story tells of a journey of healing. Warning: this book is for adults only due to explanations of sexual and physical violence causing dissociation at an early age.

Helped by intensive psychological therapy, Debra's subconscious peels away layer by layer, revealing horrific trauma caused by her parents at a very young age. Due to the trauma, Debra has been unable to overcome serious fears and beliefs about herself and her world. Her damage was so severe, the foundation of her psyche had to be remade. Because of the nature of DID having been formed during the violence, she has been "stuck in the trauma" and unable to process and change without professional help. But process she did through a great deal of emotional pain and physical discomfort.

Fractured Mind: The Healing of a Person with Dissociative Identity Disorder also describes an unusually close relationship with God and what Debra calls the "Other Realm." The story witnesses the love and comfort of God, but it also tells of God's wisdom and justice. Debra brings her relationship with her God to life in the book and that relationship seems as real as any relationship with a loving, guiding, parent.

Debra writes a narrative throughout the book, but the main writing style is an email dialogue between her, her "parts", and Bruce. Bruce's wisdom and spiritual understanding lend an amazing perspective on the struggles of healing from violence. About the Author
Debra Bruch is a retired Associate Professor of Theatre at Michigan Technological University. She received her doctorate degree in Theatre from the University of Missouri – Columbia. Debra is an ordained minister in the Community of Christ. Dr. Bruch was active in the Association for Theatre in Higher Education, the national theatre association for the academe, especially with the Religion and Theatre Focus Group. She was on R&T's executive council for several years, was conference planner, and chair/focus group representative. Through ATHE, she founded and was the general editor for the peer-reviewed journal, The Journal of Religion and Theatre, from 2002 to January 2006. She is interested in the relationship between Australian culture and Australian drama, and has published and presented papers exploring Australian Aboriginal drama. By invitation, in January 2007, she traveled to Iran to attend the International Seminar on Religion and Drama on merit of her article about Jack Davis' The Dreamers. Debra also served as an adjudicator for the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival for several years. She has been included in Who's Who of America's Teachers and Who's Who of American Women.

An Excellent Book

This is an excellent book, as much a documentary as an autobiography, because the author has included as a major part of the book her actual e-mail correspondence with one of her mentors. I've known several people with DID, and read other books, and this is one of the best books in this genre. I couldn't put it down. It's also a personal testimony in addition to being autobiographical, because it includes Dr. Bruch's description of her relationship with God and how that facilitated her healing. That was helpful to me.

This harrowing but arresting memoir—written in alternating voices by identical twins, now in their 50s—reveals how devastating schizophrenia is to both the victim and those who love her. The condition, which afflicts Pamela (an award-winning poet), can be controlled with drugs and psychiatry, but never cured. When the twins were young, Pamela always outshone Carolyn. But in junior high, Pamela was beset by fears and began a lifelong pattern of cutting and burning herself. After the two entered Brown University, Pamela's decline into paranoia accelerated until she attempted suicide. During the ensuing years of Pamela's frequent breakdowns and hospitalizations, Carolyn became a psychiatrist, married and had two children. Empathetic and concerned, Carolyn nonetheless conveys her overwhelming frustration. and occasional alienation from her sister, when she is unable to help. Pamela's schizophrenia caused their father to sever his relationship with her. Remarkably descriptive, Pamela's account details how it feels to hear voices and to suspect evil in everyone. Though she struggles with her medications, Pamela remains a committed poet and is now reconciled with her father and close to her twin. 8 pages of b&w photos not seen by PW.

Add certifiable schizophrenia to the potent emotional state of identical twinship, and the potential for nightmare magnifies. In their disturbingly powerful memoir, however, the Spiro sisters reveal all this as the stuff of their everyday reality. Explosive encounters with one another, other family members, friends, and medical professionals are recounted with jarring straightforwardness. Alternating recollections about being half of a pair of youngsters growing up in the 1960s highlight the sisters' individual personalities while they relate sisterly connections, competitiveness, and co-option. When Pamela's illness emerged at the beginning of adolescence and subsequently spiraled out of her control, it became a virtual separate entity that taxed the limits of the sisters' relationship and continues to test their endurance. This memoir probably afforded its authors great therapeutic value, but readers struggling with schizophrenic family members may find it too graphic. Donna Chavez

A biblical review by Don the Baptist of the text “Divided Minds: Twin Sisters and Their Journey Through Schizophrenia” by Pamela Spiro Wagner and Carolyn S. Spiro, M. D.” I read the text in its entirety.

Prepare yourself for “F-bombs”. Filthy language is scattered throughout the text.

As this is a somber text, there is little comedic value to be gleaned with the single exception of Carolyn snagging a driver’s license after Pamela takes the actual test. (page 89)

Then, on a serious note, though unintentional, this text starkly outlines the utter helplessness of the psychiatric community to offer any verifiable semblance of hope for a variety of the gravest of psychological problems. The text spans the mid-1960’s until close to the present day, and the narrative is written largely as a conversation from the first-person perspectives of the two sisters.

Of particular interest, Carolyn – a psychiatrist – describes the setting of one of Pamela’s many in-hospital environments. (page 273) As if psychiatric problems were not enough, the patients are housed in deplorable conditions.

Note: As an evangelist, I have personally visited patients in such facilities; Carolyn’s evaluation is entirely accurate.

The severity of Pamela’s malady is best illustrated by the contrast on pages 272 where Carolyn – her twin – is a sharp looking, well dressed 40-something woman – as compared to Pamela herself – who appears to be little more than a bag lady. (page 274)

Arriving at the heart of the matter (I am by no means catholic), Pamela remarks, “Unlike Lynnie, who converted to Catholicism in 2003, I do not have the church to moor me, to harbor me, to keep my head above water during times of crisis.” (sic, page 316) Lacking a Christ-like influence, every medication, intervention, or methodology is applied to Pamela’s case including the brain frying practice of Electro-Convulsive Therapy (page 313), but the one thing that could have brought relief – a relationship with Christ – is totally ignored.

At no time is God sought out for help.

In fact, Pamela remarks “…how I would most certainly not be going to heaven.” (page 2) And she adds, “I don’t know if I believe in God or not. I mean, I do believe in God, but I know as a Unitarian [her family’s church of choice] I’m not supposed to, and a part of me agrees it is silly, there’s no two ways about that.” (page 62)

So here we have an intellectual family headed by a prominent doctor, all of whom have done very well for themselves without God… until young Pamela falls apart and has nowhere to turn. In fact, she does not even have a clue where to start to look in her search for help. Atheism, without exception, exacts a high price.

Nonetheless, the Bible states:

James 5:14-15, “Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.”

There is no intention to oversimplify schizophrenia herein; it will not be cured with an isolated scriptural excerpt. But to be sure, as God is excluded from the problem, the matter will degenerate until the gravest of measures are – in fact – necessitated, including the worst that the psychiatric community can conjure. Nonetheless, at the onset of the problem, God should have been sought out, and the elders of the Church (Christ’s Church, not catholicism) should have been consulted.

But to repeat, in Pamela’s case, at no time is God sought out for help.

A captivating memoir with so many themes and a challenge to psychiatry

I couldn't turn off that kindle until I had read the last word. Pammy was already close to my hear before I read this memoir of theirs - so you can imagine where she is now in ranking right?

I recall a post on my other heroine and friend's blog: I think it was on bipolar guilt by association! Yep that's it. Could we say Lynnie was same? Let's leave the different label alone but the point remains that you can't help not 'catching the flu' if you hang around or care for a patient right or wrong? and so what if you do? There is so much to explore in that memoir.

I commend the both authors. Their father's behaviour and maybe the reasons or the siblings approach to him and Pammy altogether, rings so much of a bell in my own neighbourhood. In my case sadly, my brother died not receiving the wink he so much longed from his father. I have drawn my safe boundary and am peace as is. He can stay in his corner and review his own motives!

I recommend this book to all and sundry especially those in psychiatry world.

impelling account

I know several people who have schizophrenia but never have seen into their worlds. I just understood that their brains see life differently and frequently delusionally. This dual memoir opens the lives and perceptions of the twin sisters to the reader as no other account could do. It often is so intense that I had to put it down for a while. But it helped me understand what the schizophrenic experiences, and the feelings of helplessness of those who love and care for them, and to understand that the person with schizophrenia does not choose to be so.

An invaluable resource

I'm very impressed with this grammar. Morwood makes no claims that he is replacing Smyth's grammar for breadth. Instead, the Oxford Grammar of Classical Greek sets out in a very consise and clear manner various paradigms and rules. I particularly appreciate the VERY good verb section - not only providing paradigms for the regular conjugations and types of verbs, but also giving the principle parts of the 100 most common irregular verbs. For someone (like myself) who can never seem to remember all of the irregular verbs that seem to pop up in translations FAR too often, this grammar will become a favorite resource. My only complaint -- I'm sure that my grammar skills have declined as a result of relying upon this book rather than my memory during translations.

A good beginners/intermediate guide to greek grammar

A well set out book of ancient greek grammar. Contains most necessary paradigms, and also a lot about various grammatical constructions. Because of its limited size, it does not go into much detail with the grammar points but for someone starting or continuing on with Ancient Greek (inc NT Greek) this is a very handy reference to have. Also contains some useful appendices and an extremely limited Greek-English, English-Greek dictionary. This book is a lot easier to understand than a lot of the old books, eg. Goodwin, Smyth. Also a lot cheaper here than what I paid for it (although shipping to Oz would have cost a bit).

A good quick reference

After many years of just using Smyth's grammar, I decided to take a look at other texts. This is a good book and the author outlines its limitations at the outset. With this text you have the basic tools at your disposal but there is something to be said for the context in which Smyth put things. I am still getting used to the format and those of us who learned Greek the old way may never get used to the absence of more scholarly material and references. No question about the fact that if you have Smyth you will default to it most of the time. But if you are travelling or need a quick and dirty answer, this is the way to go.

Sexton claimed that poetry kept her alive through periods of suicidal self-hatred, and indeed her poetry started as therapy, a means suggested by her psychiatrist of documenting the unspeakable. This volume contains selections, many of them familiar, from her eight books. Despite professional success, she continued to suffer, but her work does more than document the pain that finally led to alcohol addiction and suicide. Labeled confessional, she preferred to be called a storyteller, often adopting a persona: "Like Oedipus I am losing my sight./Like Judas I have done my wrong." It's not her fault that they didn't pick her very best!

Okay. No offense to Anne Sexton, but this book just doesn't cut it. The people who did the "selecting" didn't do a very good job. Many good poems which are hard to find are found, but many of her greatest that are easily found aren't even mentioned in this book. And why does Middlebrook always do the commentaries?? I love Anne Sexton and she needs to be portrayed for her art, not for the mentally ill, depressed, phsychotic person that she was. I mean--her poetry is terrific, and personally, I don't think that Middlebrook does a very good job of summarizing Anne Sexton to the readers.

Selections superior to the Collection

I'd seriously have to bicker with another reviewer and state that Middlebrook did a fine job selecting the "most worthy" of Sexton's poetry. Let's face it: towards the end of Sexton's career as a poet, she pumped out more garbage than grandeur...and Middlebrook (whose biography on Sexton, by the way, is among the best biographies on ANYbody) seems perfectly aware of that. With "Selected Poems" in print, scholars of poetry no longer have to plow through rubble to find a few diamonds.

Mears, who teaches woodlore courses, advocates learning to "see through the eyes of an indigenous native." He emphasizes a back-to-nature philosophy and survival skills that can be applied nearly anywhere. The line drawings are very good; Mears is obviously knowledgeable and writes clearly. The book is a mixture of very basic skills, such as making fire, plus recipes for outdoor cooking, truck identification, basket making, and poisonous fungi identification. Unfortunately, each topic receives just one or two pages, and no references for further reading are supplied. Furthermore, this book was first published in Great Britain, and all the supply source addresses are British. Readers wanting some depth and American specificity would do better with Tom Brown's Field Guide to Wilderness Survival (Berkley Bks., 1984) or Paul Rezendes's Tracking and the Art of Seeing ( LJ 10/15/92). Not recommended.

While Mears' book has clear illustrations and an interesting (seasonal) organization, other books such as Outdoor Survival Skills by Larry Dean Olsen and How to Stay Alive in the Woods by Bradford Angier both provide more in depth, specific information.

Good all around book

First, this book is not about wildnerness survival. The recipes that include garlic and butter are well, not practical if your lost in the woods. The book is more geared towards going into the wilderness with everything you need at your disposal, and not lacking the essentials. The information is well presented, and does not deal with emergencies but rather going out into the woods and enjoying yourself.

The book is more about developing a spiritual relationship with wildnerness and emergency wildernesss survival is a matter of life and death, and not a romantic experience where you walk out having touched the hand of God. If you live, you will probably find God. I bought this book for the sole purpose of learning about survival in the wilderness. I found alot of very useful information, but, having a pretty solid base already, the book is still a fun read.

The sections on cordage are very well done, and the sections on pottery, skinning are also well done. I think if you want to have a rewarding wilderness experience without the dangers of being lost, this book is awesome. If your looking for what to do in case your lost, this might not cover all the bases.

The Outdoor Survival Handbook

The subtitle of this book is: a guide to the resources and materials available in the wild and how to use them for food, shelter, warmth, and navigation. The author has parceled out his observations, instruction and advise according to the four seasons. So rather than having a single chapter on types of shelter which one could locate or construct in the wilderness within the various climates or seasons, he parcels out this information over the four main chapters of the book. He does this for each category of survival: shelter, fire, water, cordage, and food. His intention seems to be that the reader use the book as an introductory survival course beginning in the spring, focusing on the particular type of shelter shown in that chapter and not getting distracted by other types that either cannot or need not be built then.

There is some sense to this kind of organization, but yet he leaves any discussion of hygiene or cooking, for example, until the summer chapter, when surely this information would have been just as relevant to the spring. If you have to at least selectively read ahead anyway to be better informed, why not just organize the book from the start so that the categories of survival occur as separate chapters, with the special circumstances of each season being discussed within the category, rather than breaking the content of the category across the four seasons? But the organization according to seasons allows the author to focus upon nature as it lives in each season, which seems to be as important to him as the types of shelter or the various methods of starting a fire.

The book is well illustrated and feels quite accessible. There is quite a bit of useful information on tinder and laying out fuel for a fire, even though it doesn't all occur, as it logically should, in a single chapter; and there is much, also, on cordage, but again, not all in one place. Because of the large and clear illustrations, it seems a good enough first book on wilderness survival. It does not overwhelm the reader with detail, but for some readers it is that very complexity of detail and a more rigorous organization that would be missed.

Useful Introductory Text

This text is considered one of the key references for dislocation theory and dynamics, in addition to J.P. Hirth and J. Lothe text, as well as, D. Hull and D.J. Bacon introductory book. The target audience is upper-division undergraduates in materials science or metallurgy. I find the text to be well written and includes almost complete derivations. The illustration and figures; although simple, are informative and convey the intended message ( would be nice if a upon a newer edition figures were expanded upon and more detailed). The problems provided at the end of each chapter are useful for extending ones knowledge, however, they are challenging (no solutions are provided). If your looking for a dedicated introductory text to dislocations this is a good start.

Neat to find this in the US

I sent this to my grand baby for Christmas and his French mom is thrilled. She said she wanted very much to read Dr. Seuss but the English version didn't quite make sense to her. The French version takes this tricky English story book and translates it into something that's enjoyable in French.

As a long time fan of Dr. Seuss I was thrilled to get this for my yet-to-be born daughter. My wife and I already read it to her at least once a week. No surprises other than a few french words we were not familiar with. Still, a must for lovers of the French language and Dr. Seuss.

A book written to be readable and useful

This is both a terrific introduction and a serious deepening of wound care for the healthcare professional. Physicians: never mind that it is not authored by fellow physicians. It is obviously authored by real-world clinical experts with a passion for mixing the right amount of scientific underpinning with generous portions of "here's how you do it" down-to-earth grittiness. I am a physician who is trained in both surgery and infectious disease, and I would trust myself in the authors' care anytime -- whether as student or as patient. No one writes this clearly or lays out a book this thoughtfully without having the rare "right stuff".

I am using this to try to get my WOCN certification, but even if I don't succeed I feel I have gotten a lot of good information from this book. I think this is a good reference for any nurse with an interest in wound care.

I actually liked this book better than the yellow book that most people recommend using (granted I have both). I found this very helpful to study for my CWS along with the usual yellow wounds book.
